AFL Betting Tips Round 22: Key Stats for Saturday Games

Can Giants cement Top 4 spot in Battle of the Bridge?

The twilight game on Saturday shapes up as the game of the round, with both Sydney sides looking to establish themselves as the Harbour City's best team.

Another derby takes place on Saturday night, with the Gold Coast aiming for a redemptive win over big brothers Brisbane.

Also on Saturday night, Hawthorn will be hunting another four points in their race for the top four.

GWS v Sydney

AFL Odds: GWS $1.71 (-6.5) / Sydney $2.15 (+6.5)

The latest edition of the "Battle of the Bridge" promises to be one of the best yet.

Both Sydney clubs are in strong positions with two rounds to play.

If the Giants win, they will likely secure a top four spot, while if the Bloods triumph, they will guarantee themselves a finals berth.

It wasn't looking all that flash for the Swans a fortnight ago, but wins against the Magpies and Demons in consecutive weeks has them in the thick of things once again at the pointy end of the season.

Aliir Aliir's form in defence has been a huge part of this success. He will need another top game if the Swans are to get over the line, especially after the injuries to Nick Smith and Alex Johnson.

Despite significant injury concerns of their own, GWS are still deserved favourites to get the four points.

With a big crowd expected at Spotless Stadium for this derby, the Giants will look to impress with a strong performance.

AFL Player In Aiden Corr (GWS, likely), Zak Jones (Swans)

AFL Player Out Josh Kelly (GWS, likely), Heath Shaw (GWS), Alex Johnson (Swans), Nick Smith (Swans)

AFL Weather No rain, but with strong winds forecast, kicking accuracy in front of goal could become a challenge.

All year, it has been the last step that has let the Giants down.

They have a key advantage over rivals when it comes to winning the ball, and getting it inside 50, however it is their goal kicking accuracy that needs to improve.

Another poor kicking display will open the door for the Swans to nab the four points.

Key AFL Stat

  • The Giants have won each of their last Saturday matches by a margin of 1-39 points: GWS to win by a margin of 1-39 points @ $2.25

AFL Betting TipAFL Betting Tip: GWS to win head-to-head @ $1.71

Reasoning: As good as the Swans have been in the last two rounds, you feel that beating GWS at Spotless is just a step too far.

Gold Coast v Brisbane

AFL Odds: Gold Coast $4.20 (+27.5) / Brisbane $1.23 (-27.5)

From the Sydney derby, Round 22 takes us further up north for the Queensland derby between the Suns and Lions.

As much as Gold Coast would want to bounce back at home after being humbled last week by the Tigers, the more established Brisbane Lions look to have their measure here.

Brisbane once again put in an impressive performance last week, leading the Magpies for much of the first half down in Melbourne.

Dayne Beams continues to impress since relinquishing the responsibility of captaincy, and he is set for another big game here.

A strong win in this clash will do wonders for Brisbane's confidence and to instil belief that they can return to the top eight next season.

AFL Player In None

AFL Player Out Darcy Gardiner (Lions), Pearce Hanley (Suns)

AFL Weather Perfect conditions for footy, which should favour high-scoring football.

AFL Player StatsKey AFL Stats

  • The Lions have won each of their last 4 night matches against the Suns: Brisbane to win head to head @ $1.23
  • Gold Coast have lost 9 consecutive matches at Metricon Stadium: Brisbane to win head to head @ $1.23
  • The Suns have covered the line in 5 of their previous 7 home matches against the Lions: Gold Coast to cover +27.5 point line @ $1.92

AFL Betting TipAFL Betting Tip: Brisbane to win by a margin of 40+ points @ $2.60

Reasoning: The Lions have been great in the second half of the season, compared to the Suns awful showing.

St Kilda v Hawthorn

AFL Odds: St Kilda $5.30 (+33.5) / Hawthorn $1.16 (-33.5)

After last week's terrific win over Geelong, there is no question of the Hawks flying under the radar anymore.

Sitting in fourth spot on the ladder, Hawthorn have two winnable games to finish their regular season, beginning with this match against local rivals St Kilda.

With Tom Mitchell starring week after week, as well as Luke Breust leading a well-oiled forward line, Alastair Clarkson's men should easily brush aside the lowly Saints.

Off the back of four consecutive defeats, St Kilda will be desperate to notch up a win before the end of 2018.

Unfortunately for them, you can't see that happening here.

AFL Player In Jarryd Roughead (Hawks, likely), Ben McEvoy (Hawks, likely)

AFL Player Out Nathan Brown (Saints)

AFL Weather Nothing to report with the closed roof at Etihad Stadium.

AFL Player StatsKey AFL Stats

  • St Kilda have lost 8 consecutive Saturday night matches: Hawthorn to win head to head @ $1.16
  • The Saints have covered the line in 4 of their last 5 Saturday matches as an underdog: St Kilda to cover the +33.5 point line @ $1.92
  • Since 2015, Hawthorn have only covered the line in 36% of their matches as a favourite following a win in the previous round: St Kilda to cover the +33.5 point line @ $1.92

AFL Betting TipAFL Betting Tip: St Kilda to cover the +33.5 point line @ $1.92

Reasoning: Even though the Saints haven't won in a month, they have been plucky, and led for significant portions of the game against the Giants and Bulldogs.

They should have enough desire to keep this game tight until the end.

Standard Tipping Rules (Betting Prices Game)
  • Each winning tip score equals the price of the team at the time the tip is submitted as appearing on your tipping screen.
  • If no prices are available, the score for a winning tip will equal the starting price of the winning team at Sportsbetting.com.au
  • For NRL tipping - If the match is a draw at full time, tip score equals the price of the team awarded for selecting the winner of the golden point play off. If it is still a draw after golden point no points are awarded for the game.
  • For AFL, Super Rugby and Mitre 10 Rugby competitions - No points are awarded for drawn games.
  • For A-League/EPL you must select the 'Draw' to receive the price when the match results in a draw. If you select a team in a drawn match you will receive no points for the match.
  • A score margin is required to be entered for 1 game within the round.
Margin Games
  • For one match in each round you will be required to enter a margin. The margin represents the amount that you predict your selected team will win by. Your margin score will be used to determine the winner of a round or the entire competition if the tipping scores are equal. The lower your margin score the better.
  • Calculating margins

If the team you tip wins the match, your margin score is the difference between the actual margin in the Full Time Score that the team you tipped won by, and the margin your entered. For example if you tipped Australia

Full time score Australia 54 vs Italy 6
    Margin entered 36
    Actual Margin 48
    Margin Score 48 - 36 = 12

If the team you tipped loses the match, your margin score is the actual margin plus the margin entered. For example if you tipped Italy:

Full time score Australia 54 vs Italy 6
    Margin entered 6
    Actual Margin 48
    Margin Score 48 + 6 = 54

  • If a tipper does not submit a tip for a game they are awarded the away team.
  • If a tipper does not submit any tips for a round then they do not receive points for the first winning tip in that round.
  • Tips can be entered up to advertised start time for the game.
  • After the advertised start time has passed tips for the game cannot be entered.
  • Tips cannot be changed after they are submitted.
  • For competitions where tippers enter a margin, the margin score will be used to determine the winner of a round or the overall competition if the tip scores are equal. For example if two tippers share 1st place on 100 points, the tipper with the lowest margin score will be the winner.
  • If the margin feature is not turned on and tippers have equal tipping scores, or if tippers have equal tipping scores and equal margins, the winner will be awarded using a count back system where the tipper who led most recently will be awarded the prize.
  • If tippers cannot be split using these methods then the prize will be shared.
Standard Tipping Rules (Points Game)
  • Picks are entered for each game in a round. 1 point is awarded for picking the winner of the match.
  • A bonus 5 points are awarded for picking a perfect round.
  • For NRL picking - If the match is a draw at full time, 1 point is awarded for selecting the winner of the golden point play off. If it is still a draw after golden point no points are awarded for the game.
  • For AFL, Super Rugby and Mitre 10 Rugby competitions - If the match result is a draw, no points are awarded for picks in the match.
  • For A-League/EPL you must select the 'Draw' to receive 1 point when the match results in a draw. If you select a team in a drawn match you will receive no points for the match.
  • A margin score is required to be entered for one match in each round. The margin represents the amount that you predict your selected team will win by. Your margin score will be used to determine the winner of a round or the entire contest if the scores are equal. The lower your margin score the better the entrant is deemed to have performed.
Score Margin Information
  • For one match in each round you will be required to enter a score margin. The margin represents the amount that you predict your selected team will win by. Your margin score will be used to determine the winner of a round or the entire competition if the picking scores are equal. The lower your margin score the better.

  • Calculating margins

If the team you pick wins the match, your margin score is the difference between the actual margin in the Full Time Score that the team you picked won by, and the margin you entered. For example, if you picked New Zealand in the following scenario:

Full time score New Zealand 54 vs Australia 6
    Margin entered 36
    Actual Margin 48
    Margin Score 48 - 36 = 12

If the team you picked loses the match, your margin score is the actual margin plus the margin entered. For example, if you picked Australia for the same scenario:

Full time score New Zealand 54 vs Australia 6
    Margin entered 6
    Actual Margin 48
    Margin Score 48 + 6 = 54
  • If a entrant does not submit a pick for a game, they are assigned the away team as their pick for that game.
  • If a entrant does not submit any picks for a round, as a penalty, they do not receive points for their first winning pick in that round. For example, if 8 away teams win in the round that the entrant missed, then 7 points will be awarded.
  • Picks can be entered up to advertised start time for the game.
  • After the advertised start time has passed picks for the game cannot be entered or changed.
  • Picks can be changed up to the advertised start time of the game.
  • Points awarded to entrants will be aggregated at the completion of each round during the contest, and entrants will be ranked in accordance with the points they scored and their margin score for the round.

  • For competitions where entrants enter a margin, the margin score will be used to determine the winner of a round or the overall competition if the pick scores are equal. For example if two entrants share 1st place on 100 points, the entrant with the lowest margin score will be the winner.
  • If there is tip score and margin score tie-break, the winner of the round or the overall competition will be the entrant who was first to enter their picks.
  • If entrants cannot be split using these methods then the prize will be shared.
